Details have just been released of a fund-raising rail tour from Salisbury to Corfe Castle and Swanage adding the 8th of May to this already wonderful long week-end.
The Swanage Railway will be running a special timetable of steam and diesel hauled trains with the theme of "A Day on the Mule". It will commemorate the time, in the early 1960's, when both steam and diesel locomotives ran on the Waterloo-Salisbury-Exeter line. Railway enthusiasts nicknamed this route "The Mule" due to the fact that, allegedly, 'it was a bit of a plod but you got to where you wanted to go - eventually'.
Also on Thursday 8th May, "The Swanage Lifeboatman" has been organised by UKRailtours on Thursday 8th May 2014 towards fund-raising for the enlarged Lifeboat House and new Shannon Lifeboat for Swanage.
From 9th to 11th May the Swanage Railway will operate its 9th Annual Diesel Gala and Dorset Beer Festival. All services are scheduled to be diesel hauled with many visiting locomotives taking part. In addition a couple of engines will be on display at Corfe Castle Station as will an RNLI D Class Lifeboat.
On 10th & 11th (Saturday and Sunday) there will be a Model Railway Exhibiton at Harmans Cross Village Hall and, on the Sunday only, Swanage RNLI Fundraisers are organising a Family Day in the Village Hall grounds with lots to do and plenty of opportunities to donate to Swanage RNLI!
